Using Tracfone on an iPhone

iPhone 4S on a Tracfone Service Plan

In a recent post I discussed how to significantly reduce your monthly cell phone bills by switching to a prepaid plan such as Tracfone.

This past week I took a used (hand me down) iPhone 4s that was originally a AT&T cell phone and converted the iPhone to a Tracfone service plan. You can purchase a used iPhone 4s via eBay for under $100.

I purchased directly from Tracfone a AT&T sim card specific to my iPhone 4s, removed the old AT&T sim card and replaced it with the newer Tracfone AT&T Sim Card for $7.99.

Add to that a 120-minute card (triple minutes) good for 90 days and essentially you have iPhone service for approx. $10 a month. The triple minutes offers you 360 minutes, 360 text messages and 360 megs of data every ninety days. If you need more there are larger refill cards available.

I watched a You tube video which lead me to believe I needed to remove the back cover to replace the sim card, “wrong”; after purchasing a special screwdriver to remove the back cover I discovered that I didn’t need to remove the cover at all.

All I needed was a paperclip to pop out the old sim card and insert the new sim card.

Since I already owned an older Tracfone (non-iPhone) with minutes still remaining I had to transfer the minutes and phone number over to the iPhone 4s, that took less than 30 minutes to complete. I was able to complete the transfer all online without talking to anyone.

The process was quick and straight forward.

Even with Tracfone as my cell phone provider, all the functionality on the iPhone 4s works just as if I had AT&T service.

By the way if you have Verizon service instead, you can purchase a Tracfone Verizon Sim Card and convert that phone as well.

Bottom line, you can significantly reduce your monthly cell phone service plan by switching.
